Mass of the Taller – January 6th, 2010

The taller was the currency in use during medieval times and Gemona del Friuli. This borderland, still subject to raids by barbarian peoples and the invaders from across the border during medieval times, attempted, over centuries, to achieve a native form of protection and defense. Men of the local army formed a group who, after a ceremony of investiture and submission which included the donation of just aspiring to a taller, the old currency, to the celebrant (the submissive gesture showed the religious power and purpose), assumed the task of protecting and defending the community from attack. The ceremony is historical and is preceded by a procession of nobles in costume, accompanied by a squad of guards and musicians, through the medieval streets of the place, until you get to the wonderful Cathedral of Santa Maria, where the Mass is celebrated. Today is the Mayor, representative of political power and leading the procession in medieval constume, who offers the silver taller to the priest during the function. This is a must event!
